Windsor is a town in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,632 at the 2020 census. Windsor is included in the Augusta, Maine micropolitan New England City and Town Area.

History

The territory was first incorporated March 3, 1809 under the name of "Malta." Shortly after, a minor rebellion called the "Malta War" broke out against the Massachusetts state government in Boston over settlement and land ownership rights. In 1820, the town was reincorporated under the name "Gerry" to honor the statesman Eldridge Gerry. Two years after that, the town was renamed Windsor in its final reincorporation.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,575 people, 1,039 households, and 721 families living in the town. The population density was . There were 1,152 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the town was 97.0% White, 0.4% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.

There were 1,039 households, of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 30.6% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.87.

The racial makeup of the town was 98.46% White, 0.27% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.

There were 846 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
