So what is it? Domain Authority? Is it something you purchase? Is it good for my site? Why is it important for SEO?

All of these questions are relevant. And I will answer them to the best of my ability. As you may or may now know there are several things that come into play when doing SEO for Google. Google launches several algorithm updates every year. Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, and more to come I am sure. I like to call it the "Google Zoo". Within these updates is basically a new way they think of ranking clients organically. Organic rankings being the results that are not paid for such as the "Google Ad Words" or the "Google Shopping" results. Obviously their ultimate goal is to come up with the most relevant results that are not spam. In the old days rankings used to be based on how many links point to your site for a single "keyword". If you had more links pointing to your site then your competitors then that was what got you to the top of the rankings. As of now Google uses totally different metrics to judge a sites link value, or as I like to call it "link juice". Domain Authority (DA) is something that they value highly.

What Is Domain Authority

Since I don't work at Google I can only give you my assumption based on my results and other SEO's results on what it is. Domain Authority is how much a specific website is valued by Google. In other words if we were talking cars, the value of a Ferrari VS a Honda is going to be considerably higher. It is the same with website's...If you have links pointing to you from lets say a local moving company, VS a link from Apple it is going to be considerably better in Google's eyes and they reward you for it by giving you higher rankings. And that's it. For you to have high Domain Authority links from other site's there are several options. Exchange of links known as "reciprocal links", purchased links from link vendors, or simply signing up for a membership such as the Chamber of Commerce. These are just a few ways of successfully getting higher Domain Authority links to your site.

Are they expensive?

Depending on your methods higher DA links can range from $5 to several hundred dollars per link.
Obviously you get what you pay for so if you have a higher budget for SEO go for the kill with the highest DA links you can find.

How do I know what the DA is of a specific site.

The ultimate way to figure out the DA of a site is to copy the URL and paste it into the SEO Software from Majestic. Majestic tells you several different metrics on a specific site, including Domain Authority. Majestic is not free however if you are interested you can contact Vega Marketing Solutions for a free marketing analysis on your website and your top competitors.
