Warts have always been associated with witchcraft and, on the hands, several other activities. There are variations and not all these should be lumped together.
The usual wart that often occurs on fingers and other parts of the hand, are very different to a similar growth on feet known as verruca. And other unrelated small growths such as genital warts and milia are different again.

But this story is absolutely true. At school, the art teacher, an old spinster, could without fail, charm a wart away. As a twelve-year-old I heard about this dubious claim and showed her the one wart that had been on one of the lines on the palm of my hand.
She gently stroked it with her thumb and told it to leave, adding a few words in some other language. I was obviously sceptical as I had it for two or three years. But when I looked a week later, there wasn’t a sign of it having ever existed.
