The instinctive desire that we have to prepare house and home for our soon-to-be-born babies is something that we share with most of the animal kingdom. Not only is it natural and instinctive to wish to clean, organise, construct and plan for baby’s arrival, it’s also entirely practical. After all, just how much time exactly do you think you’re going to have to scrub down the surfaces once you have a hungry, thirsty newborn crying out for your attention?

This period of nesting can happen at any time during your pregnancy, and in fact, is most likely to occur in fits and starts throughout the entire 9 months. That said, nesting is most commonly reported during the final weeks, during the third semester. Nevertheless, why wait until then? We know that there is much to do before the big day and, besides, that day could come earlier than you think.

Here we take a look at some of the things you can do to get ready for your beautiful newborn baby, to ease your anxiety, be practical and prepared, and have everything in order to help you through those all-important first few weeks.

Get the essential items ready

Don’t delay getting in plenty of nappies, baby bibs ( check out this selection of personalised bibs), towels, tissues, bottles and blankets. The sooner you get these basics in, the sooner you’ll feel that you are well on your way to being ready for baby. Also, these means larger essential items, too, such as a cot, pram or push chair. Other items that you’ll certainly pleased for having include a tub for warm baths, baby shampoo and soaps, baby mittens and clothes like onesies, hats and socks. Also, have a thermometer in the house, which will surely come in handy at some point. Get all these essentials in house and organised, and you’ll know that come what may, you’ll have it under control.

Stock up the cupboards

Once you are finally at home with your gorgeous newborn baby, you certainly won’t want to have to worry about going up the road to the supermarket, so far better to have fully stocked cupboards, fridge and freezer instead – and we’re not just talking about for baby. Be certain that you never have to worry about going hungry by making a few big, freezable meals, such as bolognaise, soups and stews. Plenty of snacks will also be extremely welcome – think crackers, cheeses, crisps and biscuits. You and baby deserve to be spoiled, and you also all need plenty of rest. Stocking up well on foods and drinks will help you do just that.

Spring clean

You’ve probably been looking around the house with an analytical eye, wondering about what and when to clean. Well a thorough spring clean (no matter the time of year) will without doubt allow you to relax a little better. You might also wish to use this time to get rid of those belongings that have had their time. Over the next few months and well beyond you are sure to accumulate an enormous number of things, so get ahead by sorting out shoe and food cupboards, lofts and cellars, closets and draws. In terms of wiping down surfaces, stick to chemical-free cleaning materials, and get to cleaning down floors, walls, window sills and table tops. Also, get between the crevices of furniture, patting down cushions, too. Start early and take your time so that you won’t ever feel you have to over exert yourself in order to get the job done in time.

Spoiling

There is much more spoiling you can do other than getting in some nice snacks. Your last few weeks of pregnancy may be the last opportunity you have to go out for a pedicure, massage or to get your hair done. Similarly, you might struggle to be the socialite you once were now that you have a baby in tow, so a couple of night’s out for a nice meal with friends wouldn’t go amiss. As well as some comfy home wear and a new pair of pyjamas or dressing gown, you’ll probably also be grateful for a collection of nursing bras, pads and shirts.

If you manage to get all of the above done and organised before the big day, you’ll surely be grateful for having trusted your instincts. Your desire to prepare your home for your newborn baby is powerful and positive, so use it to productive, constructive effect.
