If it's an older smartphone, you can go into a variety of cool projects. You can turn it into a car-specific media player. You can make it a dedicated alarm clock. You can turn it into a dedicated VoIP device. These are simple projects that do not require any hacking. To really unlock the functionality of your old smartphone, just Google: "Crack (your phone model)" and see what happens.

If your phone is still working, you can start it for yourself or someone in your family. If you have an eligible device and you are a HandsetRecycle customer, you can keep the device active at a price of $6 a month. Simply bring the device to the HandsetRecycle.com page and follow the steps to activate the device.

It is also a good idea to keep a spare, inactive phone as a backup, just in case your main device has problems.

If your phone still has some life but you don't use it, consider donating to charity. Plans like the National Anti-Family Violence Coalition and Soldier Mobile Phones will find your old (working) mobile phone a new and admirable home. You can also contact the local refuge to see if they wish to take the device away from you.

How to work There is a list of charities receiving mobile phones and some interesting insights to share this issue.

If this is an old phone, but you no longer use the old phone, please sell it. You can use Glyde or other used device broker services to sell devices.

If none of the above solutions applies to you - maybe your phone is already unrepairable or completely outdated - you will have to deal with it. However, the trash is not the right place; it needs to be recycled.
