The thyroid gland sits either side of the windpipe and is one of those mysterious parts of the body that most of us have little knowledge about.

It’s described as a gland that is about the size of a plumb split into two with an isthmus joining them. We may not think too often about this but if it doesn’t function well, we certainly will know.

It feeds all the cells in the body and a common underactive thyroid will manifest itself in many ways. It produces a regular supply of two hormones that are released directly into the blood.

These help keep a strong immune system as well as aiding the central nervous system, metabolic wellbeing, blood sugar control and hormonal growth.

The two hormones contain the giveaway clues as to the major nutrient with an inclusion of the word iodine.

Iodine is the heaviest essential mineral element and for centuries has been used neat to pour on to open skin wounds as a powerful disinfectant.

The medical treatment for problem thyroid is generally easy to control with daily tablets. A supplement traded under the name of detoxadine can be taken well before the problem becomes so bad it needs the medical intervention.

Naturally, certain foods supply the required amount of iodine feed for a healthy thyroid, but as is the case with so many health problems today, we don’t eat enough of the right food.
The major natural sources include many organic foods. Yoghurt, strawberries, cheese and potatoes are a good example, but they must be organic. Best of all, are various sea vegetables and with the amount of renewable edible kelp and seaweed available, perhaps we should investigate harvesting this.
The Welsh have been doing this for many centuries along with coastal dwellers in west Scotland and Ireland.

With age comes a slowing down of hormone production. The supplement becomes more important and is highly recommended. As with any supplement, it’s important to follow the recommended dose.
