Manufacturers of central heating systems are constantly researching ways to make the systems more efficient. There are plenty of companies producing boilers and several hundred others making radiators.

In recent years the biggest development in boilers was the introduction of the combi. Old boilers used to take up a lot of room and required a header tank. But todays boilers, by being so much smaller, take up far less room and can fit into most cupboards.

With radiators, the double panel with thin fins between, spreads heated metal over a greater area.

The same can be said about controls and timers, especially as they can now be controlled remotely with an app on a mobile. This is certainly a money saver if your central heating is set to come on just an hour after you normally leave the office.

If you unexpectedly realise you’ll be home later than usual, then you can reset the time it comes on to any time later.

All these developments are designed to increase efficiency and help customers get better value for money on their fuel bills.
But you can have the latest system and it won’t do you much good if the home is not well insulated.

If in doubt about where the heat is leaking most, there are plenty of companies that offer a house visit with a thermal heating test.

Contrary to the belief of most people, windows may not be the biggest reason for heat loss, but uninsulated roof and external walls are.

Radiators don’t have to be boring and neither do they all have to be made from steel. Small aluminium radiators heat quicker than steel and there are seam top radiators as well as round top and acrylic covers where a softer finish prevents possible injury with vulnerable people around.

Any boiler over ten years should ideally be replaced with the latest economy design, and better thermostatic controls should be installed if the existing ones are very old.
