Once a year the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) releases its highly regarded Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends report. On this year’s list, Mazda Motor Corporation came out on top as the most fuel-efficient auto manufacturer in the U.S for the second consecutive year. According to EPA’s chart for model year 2013 Mazda had the highest fleet-wide adjusted fuel economy performance of 28.1 miles per gallon (MPG), and the lowest adjusted CO2 emissions of 316.
Mazda fuel economy is recognized worldwide. Mazda was able to achieve this by using two strategies to make outstanding fuel economy affordable across the entire U.S. market. By working to improve current technologies they have been able to implement the company's unique SKYACTIV Technology. SKYACTIV has given Mazda the ability to stretch their fleet’s fuel economy year after year. SKYACTIV is a brand name for a series of technologies exclusively designed by Mazda to increase fuel efficiency and engine output, first unveiled at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show. SKYACTIV was first introduced in their line of vehicles in 2011. This fuel-saving technology is constantly evolving and has had many versions, depending on the model. In a nutshell, SKYACTIV is a suite of engineering technologies and components incorporating highly efficient automatic and manual transmissions, lightweight body and chassis components, low-drag body styling, reduced rolling resistance and ultra-high compression ratio engines.
Mazda's SKYACTIV technology has made the company the front runner in fuel saving technology. The brand new Mazda3 reaches near tops in its class with EPA estimated fuel economy of 41 miles per gallon on the highway when equipped with the i-ELOOP energy regeneration system. SKYACTIV technology has also been included in the 2015 Mazda6, and the 2015 CX-5. Mazda6, equipped with i-ELOOP achieves class-leading EPA estimated fuel economy with 40 miles per gallon on the highway. The EPA estimates that at 35 miles per gallon the CX-5 still retains the title of the highest highway miles per gallon of any SUV or hybrid in North America.
"Mazda has never been one to rest on its laurels, continuing to work hard, innovate and engineer vehicles that offer class-leading fuel economy in nearly every segment it competes in," commented Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. "Because the internal combustion engine is still used in more than 90 percent of the cars and SUVs sold in North America today, we chose to focus on perfecting both the operation and performance of the engine, as well as all the other systems and components that affect efficiency. Offering this technology – at an affordable price – to every consumer will help to improve our overall environmental impact."
Ever since 1970 when Mazda brought to America its own brand of technology innovative styling with the introduction of the Mazda R-100 coupe, the company has led the way by creating affordable cars that are stylish, insightful, and fun to drive while maximizing cutting edge fuel efficiency.
