Before starting my career in real estate I had never hear about burying a Saint Joseph statue in the ground to sell your home.
But every year I have a client or two who insist on placing a St Joseph statue in the ground to aide in a successful sale of their home.

So does burying a St Joseph statue help get your home sold?Who knows?!! But after taking the time to prepare your home for sale, getting the right listing price, taking great listing photos and getting it online, it certainly can't hurt.

The History Of Burying A St Joseph's Statue

The history of burying a St Joseph Statue goes back many centuries. The most common story starts back in the 1500's when a nun Theresa of Avila was having trouble finding land to start a new convent.  To help her find the land she needed she started burying St Joseph medals and praying. Shortly after she found her land!

There is also an old German tradition of carpenter placing a Saint Joseph statue in the foundation while building a home.  The thought was to aid in a quick, safe build of the home.

Also in the 1800's Brother Andre Bessette of Montreal repeated the steps of Theresa of Avila to help owners of a piece of land change their mind about selling after they refused.  The story goes shortly after they agreed.

Who Is Saint Joseph?

We are talking about Joseph the father of Jesus.  As a carpenter, St Joseph has become the patron saint of families, homes, workers and now home sales.Who better than the father of Jesus and a carpenter to bring success to a home sale.

How To Bury A St Joseph Statue

While there are really no set way you "have" to bury a St Joseph statue here are some common guidelines:

  • Any St Joseph Statue will do, even a small one. You can even buy a St Joseph Kit on Amazon to help sell your house for as little as $5.99.

  • Wrap your statue in plastic or cloth.

  • Bury your St Joseph statue close to the street near the for sale sign.

  • Bury him 12 inches in depth.

  • Bury him facing the street.

  • Bury St Joseph upside down so he has to work harder to get out.

  • Say your prayers to St Joseph for a quick successful home sale.

The final step, which most people agree upon, is to remove the St Joseph from the ground immediately after selling.  Other wise the house will continue to sell over and over.

The Take Away

Who really knows if burying a St Joseph statue will bring you a speedy, successful sale. But after spending all the time bring your home to market, can it really hurt to take a few minutes to bury a statue?  And, you wont be the only one doing it.  There are supposedly over 2 million people a year who do!
