Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a polyether compound with many applications from industrial manufacturing to medicine. The structure of PEG is commonly expressed as H−(O−CH2−CH2)n−OH. Due to the low toxicity and good biocompatibility, PEG has been approved as pharmaceutical excipient for injection in vivo by FDA. PEGylation is a process by which one or more molecules of activated PEG react with the biomolecules, such as a proteins, peptides or oligonucleotides, resulting in the production of putative new molecular entity.
