The two major classes of complex lipids in biological materials are glycerolipids and sphingolipids, which are substituted derivatives of glycerol and of sphingosine or a related long-chain base respectively. We have developed approaches involving ESI-MS or Q-TOF MS to characterize both glycerolipids and sphingolipids. We are able to characterization of the glycerolipids of pathogenic microorganisms as well as in mammals.
