Restaurant Description
As with most legends the history of Jerseys tavern is a concoction of fact and fiction. Owners, Marion and Sandra Larrea will Neither confirm or deny the rumors of a family owned bar with an underground tunnel used to transport bootleg liquor to the thirsty masses during prohibition. Nor will the cop to the stories of a well-suited man from Philadelphia setting up shop in the little bar in Susanville, California. I however, will risk my pen name to shed some light on these shady pursuits, only to solidify the making of "the best cheesesteak this side of the Delaware." As I remember, it was Frankie "Big Mouth" Nonella who first walked through the doors of Marion's place and decided to call it home. Night after night, he'd sit at his favorite table and tell stories of his hometown. Locals would gather round as he'd talk about his love of Philadelphia and all the things that made it his "greatest city on earth." In particular, I remember the fantastic stories told about the Philly cheesesteak. His eyes would roll back in his head as he would imagine taking the dripping sandwich in his hands. He demonstrated the "Philly Lean." Stressing this eating technique had been institutionalized to save the suits from soil. Soon everyone in the place just had to try one. Frankie made a few calls back home and soon the place was crawling with suits. With them they brought soft fluffy buns, fresh steak, and plenty of white American cheese. Frankie, who was known to get overly excited, convinced Mr. Larrea to let him in the kitchen. That infamous day in California history was just the beginning. The suits never left the joint and the Larrea's were getting a little worried about their reputation. They packed up and moved their place, taking with them the secret of the Philly Cheesesteak. As I now mastered the "Philly Lean." I felt it necessary to follow. I finally tracked them down in Campbell, California some years later.
