Restaurant Description
Legend has it that Roosevelt Tamale Parlor was started in 1919 by a Dutch immigrant who so admired Teddy Roosevelt, that he named this San Francisco restaurant after the 16th U.S. President. Since 1919, Roosevelt Tamale Parlor has survived as a legend in its own right – a venerable San Francisco institution that has been patronized by loyal customers for decades. Today it is run by Chef/Owner Isaac Mejia (Don Pico’s, Rib Shack), who purchased it in 2005 and gave it a much-needed face-lift. The décor is tasteful, warm and inviting at this affordable, upscale Mission District Mexican restaurant. Roosevelt’s menu still emphasizes tamales (7.95 to 9.95), but you can now order delectable specialty entrees such as Carnitas Yucatan (11.95) and Steak Ranchero (11.95) along with the traditional combination plates (6.95 to 9.95). The aguas frescas (3.75) are house made – not to be missed. Beer and wine (small, select wine list) are available.
