Ocean Beach, or as the locals call it, “O.B.” is located along the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean in the county of San Diego. This beach community is south of Mission Bay and Mission Beach and directly north of Point Loma and approximately seven miles from downtown San Diego.
Across the street from Ocean Beach is the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier which was introduced to San Diegans on July 2, 1966. This pier is one of the few places where people can fish without a California fishing license all year long, 24 hours a day. This is the longest concrete pier on the West Coast which gives one incredible views of the San Diego coast. In fact, the pier extends 1971 feet into the ocean. Imagine that!
The main street of business in Ocean Beach is Newport Avenue. There you will find a number of antique stores, restaurants, eateries, coffee houses, bars and a number of bike and surf shops. Also in this cozy, family-friendly community is a U.S. Post Office, an independent supermarket, a public library and many other specialty shops.
On any given day, the crowd is gathering at the northern end of O.B.’s waterfront. Why? Because it’s known as Dog Beach and it’s open to dogs (leash-free) and their owners 24 hours a day and has free parking and entry. It’s a small beach but has plenty of sand for your dogs to run on and waves to romp through. There are restrooms, picnic tables and summer lifeguard service. Consumption of alcohol is permitted on the beach from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m., but prohibited at all times in parking lots, adjacent walkways and grassy parks adjacent to the beach.
Get ready for the 33rd Annual Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Festival on Saturday, June 23rd. Festivities start at 10:00 a.m. on Newport Avenue. At this free family event, you’ll enjoy live music and entertainment, a variety of vendors, incredibly talented artists, thrilling rides, and of course a refreshing beer garden. This year they have a new bike valet should you decide to ride your bike to the festival.
