Today I was blessed to meet and spend time with a family that was in need of assistance at home with their elderly parents. The daughter, who is in declining in her own health, was seeking help for her mom and dad. She was not having much luck and was being referred to Home Health agencies over and over again. Due to financial issues, the family was not able to pay out of pocket the fees associated with hiring a home health agency. So with no money to pay for care, mom and dad both were in need of skilled care and were not able to live in assisted living, she called my phone number after reading a "Comfort Care" card that she found in a physician waiting room.

After talking for quite some time about her parents and their situation, we began to talk about her life as she was growing up. I listened to this lady and felt like I was listening to my own stories. There comes a time in everyones life when they become the parent of their parents..and just like parenting your own children, this is no easy task. As our conversation continued, we laughed, cried and just discussed life in general as a child who grows into an adult, an adult who becomes a parent, the parent who becomes the grandmother etc. The stages of life. It became even more apparent to me the true meaning of the word "Today".

Being a preachers daughter, she begin to explain how her father always finished each prayer with "Thank you our gracious Lord for today". She said she often wondered why her father always stressed the word "Today". One afternoon, after her parents had began to have problems with their health, they were discussing the future when the father looked up at the mother and said "Honey, Today...." and she said that her mother looked back at him and said "Thank you Jesus.."

Now when she contacted me about Hospice and Comfort Care...we talked, the entire family and myself, about what we could do for her family today, right now, this minute. After a long discussion, I explained that we are not perfect and do not have all the answers..but what we have is compassion and we will do all that we can to help and treat her family as if they were our own. The parents hugged me and she thanked me several times and asked could she pray for me. I said "Lets pray for each other".

Her prayer, simple and short, stated..."Thank you Jesus, for this lady you have brought into our lives, Thank you our gracious Lord for today". Her father said "Today.." and the mother said "Thank you Jesus..". I felt like they were my blessing today.

Working for Hospice is not a sad and depressing job. It is a job that opens your heart, fills you with true unconditional love and compassion and allows for you to give to people, "Comfort Care"..when there seems to be no other options. When we, as a Hospice Team work with a family, we love them, we lose them and in the process they refill our hearts so that we are able to continue to help families that need us.

Hospice is Comfort Care.
