Historic Perth Amboy, Mayor Wilda Diaz, the City’s Business Improvement District (BID) and the nonprofit Renovation House are hosting a Block Party with a Purpose on Saturday, August 19, beginning at 11AM.
The free event, which includes face painting, refreshments, bouncy house inflatables and continuous music, will be held along New Brunswick Avenue from Park to New streets.
Volunteers from Renovation House are cooking hot dogs and serving them with refreshments. Music performed by live bands and played by a professional DJ will keep the party going. Fun runs until 2 PM.
Block party attendees can also dine at nearby restaurants, which offer a range of international cuisine, and shop at local stores and boutiques.
In addition, Perth Amboy, the BID and Renovation House are providing free backpacks and back-to-school items to children during the block party. Pencils, pens, pads, and spiral notebooks will be distributed while the supplies last.
Guests are asked to bring canned foods or non-perishable items to the block party. During the summer, food insecurity issues continue for working families, yet the inventories in food pantries often run very low. Canned food and monetary contributions will be shared with St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in Perth Amboy.
The celebration was created to assist people who often struggle to put enough nourishing food on their family’s table. Families have many costs as they prepare their children for the coming school year.
Mayor Diaz encourages everyone to attend and bring nonperishable items, so there are more healthy choices on the shelves of Perth Amboy’s food pantries. The Mayor also asks neighbors to share the news about the school supplies that will be available at the Block Party with a Purpose.
The event sponsors include the City of Perth Amboy, its Recreation Department, Renovation House and the BID.
About the Perth Amboy BID

The BID also provides façade grants to small businesses that make permanent improvements to their storefronts or buildings. In addition, the organization helps maintain and enhance the City’s streetscapes by installing information kiosks, planters and directional signs as well as seasonal decorations.
