Roof inspection: What are the steps

A well-installed roof will automatically maintain the integrity of the house and home. Therefore the roof is responsible for keeping rain and strong winds away from the internal house. Apart from just protecting us from wind and rain, the roof should help the house to breathe.

When you inspect your roof and you find that it cannot help you breathe, it is good to start finding alternatives for your roof. The roof inspection can be done in several ways. There is the inspection from inside and inspection from outside.
How the inspection is done

1. Inspection from out

• Inspection of this side of a roof can be done using the binoculars. Alternatively, this kind of inspection can be done while standing on your ladder. Make sure that the ladder is at the roof level. Look for possible problems on the roof. The indicators might be:

• There might be blisters or may be split on your shingles. This is an inspection that will tell you whether you need to repair or you need to replace the roof.

• Also, if the roof is loose or there are some losing shingles tiles or concrete, you probably need to repair or replace.

• If at all you will see nails that are exposed, a repair must be done. Most loose nails is an indicator of leakage.
• When the shingles appear sagging, it might be an indicator that a repair or replacement is needed.

• Look carefully for the ridges and hip. This is vital because the shingles might become loose or even break in these areas.
• Look for any sign of rust. Rusting might damage your roof fast enough. After you have noticed the rust, make an arrangement and effort to clear it through cleaning.

• Consider inspecting the flashing. This you may look at specific areas such as the chimney and ventilation.

• Carefully check your gutters and make sure that all is well. If not, take the necessary step to make sure that it stays so.

2. Inspection from inside

• While in the attic, look for any sign of leaks. This might be very evident after you have noticed the dark stains on the inside. You can also look for signs of water around the vent pipes and maybe at the chimney.

• If at all you will notice spots that are dark, feel to know if they are new or old ones. You can go ahead and use a screwdriver. If it is soft, it will mean that rooting is taking place.

• You can look for any light that is penetrating through the roof. If you will see light, it will mean that there is a gap in the roof that needs to be filled

• You might also consider looking for any sagging sign. When you notice that there is sagging on the roof, you definitely need to repair the roof.

3. Flat roof

• Look for blisters on your roof
• Look for any kind of depression. If at all you will find this, you will need to fill them with cement meant for roofing.
• Check roof flashing
• Clean drains.
