Meaning of Tie and Dye
Tie and dye is the process of producing decorated fabric through tying, folding, stitching and roaching certain parts of the fabric in order to prevent such areas from absorbing dye solution.
Materials Needed for Tie and Dye
The materials needed for tie and dye are as follows:
1. Fabric (absorbent cloth preferably 100% cotton)
2. Dye stuff of different colours
3. Chemicals these include, hydro sulphate and caustic soda
4. Spatula
5. Hand gloves
6. Twine or plastic thread
7. Dye bath
Design Methods in Tie and Dye
The following are design methods in tie and dye
1. Tying
2. Folding
3. Stitching
4. Roughing
5. Clamping
Dyeing Procedures
Dyeing procedures include the following:
1. The fabric must be washed to remove industrial starch and other inherent impurities, which may not allow the dye solution to penetrate evenly.
2. Introduce the design to the fabric by using any of the design methods.
3. Prepare the dye bath with the right quantity of dye stuff and chemicals e.g. for a 2 yard fabric you need 1 spoon full of dye stuff, 1 spoon full of hydrogen sulphate and 2 spoon full of caustic soda (1:1:2). Mix them all with hot water and add cold water enough to soak the fabric then leave the solution for fifteen minutes to allow colour development.
4. Stir the dye solution and soak the design cloth then leave the cloth in the dye solution for 15-20 minutes.
5. Remove the cloth and squeeze out excess dye solution
6. Spread fabric outside in a shady area to receive oxygen to aid further colour development
7. Then remove ties, folds or stitches as the case may be and rinse several times until excess dyes are removed.
8. Starch dry and iron the fabric.
