Artist's Statement
The good old days…they were terrible! The idea of returning to the past and recapturing traditional values is a popular theme in politics today. What many people seem to forget is how difficult the good old days were. In an era before antibiotics and antiseptics, people died of easily cured infections, childhood and infant mortality was high, food was often contaminated and foul due to lack of regulations, and the economy was faltering. I'm certain the people who lived then turned an eye fondly to the good old days.
My focus is mainly on the Victorian era, more specifically 1865 through the early 1900s. Life was harder then yet our ancestors managed to survive. Some people did more than survive; some thrived and managed to create beautiful art, crafts, and literature. There was a sense of pride in what was handmade and lovingly crafted. That aesthetic has been lost today, in the era of mass production. Unless you're very rich and can afford customization, chances are that what you own is also owned by thousands or even millions of other people.
I love the current era, despite the very precarious position our country is in and my art is an attempt to reconcile my ambivalence regarding the past and present. My work blends the old with new, old techniques with new subjects, new techniques with old subjects, and craft techniques as high art. With nods towards pop culture, literature, and politics, I seek to be whimsical, thought-provoking, and astonishing.
