IS a title which ALLUDES to the later , current sculpture of RONA PONDICK .

IT IS a non- hierarchical lateral grouping of concepts .

HISTRIONIC - ie . PERSONALITY DISORDER exemplified by EXAGERATION .

GENETIC DRIFT - ie . EVOLUTION 101 ;
When specific genetic information falls away from the gene pool .

in the age of DIGITAL NOISE

A condition that relates to DIGITAL processing which began in 1961
AND to a place and time : POST 1961 - NOW .

MUCH of RONA PONDICK 'S sculpture involves the digital manipulation of body parts via CAD .

therefore : HISTRIONIC GENETIC DRIFT in the age of DIGITAL NOISE -


METAPHORICALLY describes the sculpture of RONA PONDICK as CONTEMPORARY .

RONA PONDICK was born 1952 in BROOKLYN NY / NY , USA .

SHE worked with RICHARD SERRA during her studies at YALE for MFA , 1977 .

RICHARD SERRA is regarded as a PROCESS based MINIMALIST SCULPTOR ,
whose work describes a heightened concern with the primacy of materials and the impact that has on the body of the viewer .
HIS work relates the effects of gravity ; weight AND presence TO a visceral effect upon the emotions of the viewer .
THIS is a hallmark of SERRA and also finds its way in the work of RONA PONDICK .

HUMANITY is a by product of BEING HUMAN .

REFLECTIONS ON THE SCULPTURE OF RONA PONDICK

When I see the sculpture of RONA PONDICK ; I feel the gestures , the stance of these impossible BEINGS …… FIRST; and then ponder their questions second .
These sculptures are HYBRIDS . COMBINATIONS between HUMAN and NON-HUMAN elements…Such as : A SMALL DOG with a life-size HUMAN HEAD.
I feel the weight of that head being carried by that little dog . THIS IS EMPATHY. THAT little dog is also impossible… THIS IS COGNITIVE DISSONANCE .
I seem to be engaged by the HUMAN ELEMENTS at a visceral level AND THEN I MARVEL AT THEIR INTEGRATION second .
THEN there is the issues of : SCALE and MATERIAL . THESE sculptures are done in contemporary materials AND computer aided methods ALONG
with OLD fashioned deftness of touch… THE gestures are seemingly universal throughout HISTORY ; yet are done NOW in post - industrial methods / materials .

SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT EMERGE ARE:

MORPHOLOGY
HISTORICISM
SELF - PORTRAITURE
METAMORPHOSIS
the SYMBOLIC

IN contemporary PSYCHOLOGY we are told that IDEAS and LOGIC stems from EMOTION .
SO TOO do the ideas and questions that arise from viewing RONA PONDICKS sculpture.

THESE works are also IN YOUR FACE ; by BEING , IN YOUR SPACE…

BY clever manipulation of 3D gestures on impossible COMBINATIONS of BEING asks :
WHAT IS NECESSARY ?
WHAT IS NORMAL ?
WHAT IS PLAUSIBLE ?

I am reminded of the writings of WITTGENSTEIN and HEIDEGGER .

LATER WITTGENSTEIN and HEIDEGGER BOTH are characterized by the use of hermeneutics .
IF WE WERE to employ a hermeneutic circle with regards to the sculpture of RONA PONDICK
we might see that various layers of meaning unravel the more we are engaged .
THIS INTERTEXTUAL questioning starts with BASIC ELEMENTS , such as ;

I SEE A DOG WITH A BIG HUMAN HEAD AND FEEL THE IMPACT OF THAT BEING.

Whatever subsequent associations and meanings that emerge SPIRAL FROM THERE .

FROM ACROSS the WORLD ; HISTORY ….. OR even THE UNIVERSE .

RONA PONDICK seems to be saying to ME , THAT :

FEEL the OTHER .

THAT IS THE THESIS…

FEEL THESE SCULPTURES ; from the inside - OUTWARD

ALL subsequent meanings SPIRAL OUT from -
RESONATE TRUE from…

EMPATHY

WHETHER they BE tiny heads growing from TREES
OR EVEN … A SMALL DOG with a life size HUMAN head ; far too big for itself

WE FEEL the weight AND the IMPACT OF THAT BEING .

RONA PONDICK seems to provide a vehicle for EMPATHY…

they BESPEAK OF a community of BEING .

CONCLUSION : HISTRIONIC - GENETIC DRIFT - in the age of - DIGITAL NOISE

RONA PONDICK - AMERICAN CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE

RONA PONDICK SCULPTURE seems to affect ME on various levels .

THE outward forms ARE NOT consistent in appearance .
THEY are not consistent with NATURALISM and common sense .
THEY are strange HYBRIDS of different MORPHOLOGY and therefore differing ONTOLOGICAL states .

SO , this sculpture APPEARS to describe AN inward function OR psychological BEING .
IN other words - the sculpture describes in an inward fashion RATHER THAN that of COMMON SENSE .

THE outward APPEARANCE suggests that of A grotesque , mockery OR transformation ; ie . a METAMORPHOSIS .

I begin to think of FRANZ KAFKA and THE METAMORPHOSIS .

IN such the EXPRESSION of awakening one day AS IF A VERMIN , or UGLY BUG … IS sub - human .
THIS suggests an expression of ; OR description of AN inward psychological state of BEING ….

PERHAPS - that of GUILT / SHAME by an organism CAPABLE of - consciousness AND conscience .
THIS predisposes US to link our sense of self TO these sculptures ...

WE as viewers BEGIN to IDENTIFY with those parts MOST like OURSELVES …
WE empathize as best WE can under the circumstances with SOMETHING that is clearly IMPOSSIBLE - OR IS IT ?

WE identify with the HUMAN parts .
WE attribute OUR own feelings TO THOSE through IDENTIFICATION …

THE rest IS COGNITIVE DISSONANCE .

THESE sculptures may evoke A pathological / comical reaction .

WE SEE a dog with a FULL SIZE human head and WE feel out of touch with OUR OWN sense of REALITY .

BY playing with NORMALCY , these sculptures CONFRONT OUR own sense of REALITY …
THIS may strike us as comical OR horrible ; much like an UPFRONT confrontation with SOMEONE we do not UNDERSTAND ….

PERHAPS ; like PEER PRESSURE IN an urban environment like FLATBUSH , BROOKLYN NEW YORK … USA .

PERHAPS like where RONA PONDICK grew up .

EACH sculpture IS A morphological case study in NORMALCY and EMPATHY - AS it relates to HUMAN EXPERIENCE .

THEY are therefore EMBEDDED with both A disturbing and comical , psychological layering at the same time .
