We’ve noticed our customers’ confusion regarding whipsawing 2021 reimbursements for Chronic Care Management (CCM), Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) and other preventive care.
Much of the confusion stems from a swift policy reversal late last year. Medicare (CMS) initially finalized a 2021 physician fee cut of ~8% in November 2020, to make room for targeted primary care payment increases. Overall, this change would increase Medicare reimbursement about 10% for primary care doctors.
But then a month later Medicare reversed course when H.R. 133 (The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021) was signed into law.
The 2021 fees for Chronic Care Management (CCM), Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) and related preventive care reimbursements are now about $1 lower per patient per month compared to last year. In contrast, collaborative care model (behavioral health integration) 2021 reimbursements are up about $8 per patient per month compared to 2020.
This physician fee cut suspension is not going anywhere anytime soon. It’ll be in effect for at least the duration of 2021 and likely through 2022, proving that understanding and adjusting to these new reimbursements is imperative.
