LINUX is one of the most common UNIX OS models. It is open-source, as the source code is accessible openly. Linux OS is free & safe to use. Linux developed concerning consistency with UNIX. The list of features is somewhat close to that of UNIX.
Linux operating system is an open-source & portable operating system. Multiple users can access it at a time. It also has the characteristics of multiprogramming, as several programmers executed at a time with the LINUX operating system. Linux offers protections for users by utilizing authentication mechanisms such as data encryption.
Architecture:
LINUX operating system's architecture consists of the following layers:
Kernel: It is the central feature of the Operating System, which communicates explicitly with equipment, delivering low-level functionality for elements of the upper layer.
Hardware Layer: It consists of the external components such as Central processing units & Random Access Memory etc.
Shell: An approach to the kernel, concealing from users the nature of kernel features. The shell receives user instructions and performs the roles of the kernel.
Utilities: It provides the user with most of an operating system's features.
Advantages:
• Linux is accessible entirely free or available at a lower price than Microsoft Windows. Linux versions and releases are highly robust and can operate for years without any requirement to uninstall.
• It is relatively secure to use.
• Some of the software tools & applications running on Linux are open-source.
• Complex programs i-e. Star Office, Open Office & GIMP, are available free of charge or at a reduced rate; you don't have to chuck your outdated machines.
• It can also be used for specific purposes using Linux.
Disadvantages:
• Although Linux versions drastically enhanced in ease of usage, it is still known that Windows is more straightforward to use for non-technical device users and Windows-based PCs are far more likely to be used in schools or workplace environments.
• Linux does not help specific hardware, hardware companies usually write Windows drivers, although not all companies write Linux drivers.
• Linux has several software programs, tools, and games available, but Windows has more enormous software packages, some manufacturers' hardware support is not that strong for Linux; device installation is not as simple as Windows.
