Island peak climbing
Island peak climbing, the most demanded climbing peak in Nepal
has been fulfilling the ultimate dream of being at the Himalayan peak of
all mountaineering adventure lovers. Island peak climbing is often
considered as the warm up and acclimatization peak before embarking for
the Mt. Everest expedition. Even Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenjing Norgay
Sherpa went for Island peak climbing before conquering top of the world
first time ever in 1953 AD.
Island peak climbing is initiated after boarding a short and scenic
flight to Lukla from Kathmandu and heading towards Phakding on the same
day. On our Island peak climbing expedition we arrive at Namche bazaar
where we will be acclimatizing for a day and meet fellow everest
trekkers and mountaineers. Island peak climbing is not only limited to
peak climbing, but it is the perfect way of acknowledging local Sherpa
culture and tradition by visiting various ancient monasteries in
Tengboche and Dingboche. Before arriving at the island peak base camp we
go for day trip to Chhukung ri and trek back to Chukkung. Chukkung ri
view point offers the very close views of Mt. Lhotse and Nuptse, Ama
dablam, Makalu, Baruntse along the Imja tse valley and equally sparkling
glacial lake. Proper acclimatization is the major thing to be
considered while embarking for the island peak climbing. Therefore we
will be acclimatizing at high camp and get ready for summiting next day.
Early morning after having a meal we start climbing Island peak which
finally fulfills our ultimate desire of being at the top of Island peak.
On our way to summit we will discover one pyramid shaped very whitish
holy mountain Chhuplung also known as Sherpa god. Due to strong wind on
the summit, we head back towards Chhukung before noon and trek back to
namche bazaar and Lukla in the following days respectively. Finally we
conclude our Island peak climbing after boarding a flight back to
Kathmandu.

We wake up early today at around 3 to 4am and have our breakfast before beginning our climb. It is important we reach the summit before noon because in the afternoon the strong winds in the high lands might become a barrier for a successful summit. The trail moves up beyond the base camp for several hundred meters before striking off the steep hillside. Initially sandy, the path soon turns to grass before becoming boulder strewn. As we climb up the hill, we will see that the slope narrows and the trail enter a steep rock channel. We climb the rock gully. This is not difficult but there are several short rock steps to climb before we emerge on the right side of the gully. The route then follows a ridgeline, which leads to an exhilarating and exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier. We need to rope up for the glacier as it contains several crevasses. The guides will fix a rope wherever necessary. A steep snow slope leads us onto the summit ridge.
