Many millions of us own pet dogs, and while some make the perfect companion, others may be a little more troublesome. Sadly, dog behavioral problems are listed as one of the top reasons why pooches end up sitting forlornly in shelters or are euthanized, and so the size of the problem should not be underestimated.

The first thing to be clear of if your pet dog is displaying some behavioral problems, is that there is always a solution, it just may take time, patience and a whole lot of effort, and it need not signal the end of a loving relationship with your pet

Recognizing and accepting that your pet has a problem:

Part of the solution to your dogs’ problem, will stem from your acknowledgement of it, and your reaction to it. Ignoring a behavioral problem won’t make it go away, and not accepting that it has a problem, is certainly not the solution either. Recognizing the problem, accepting it and being prepared to help your dog overcome it, is the best way to get back on track to having a well-rounded, healthy best friend.

How you may have unknowingly encouraged or influenced your pets’ problem:

As difficult as it may be to accept, a dogs’ behavioural issues will often stem directly from its owner’s influence, and you may need to address whether you are giving your dog what it needs to be healthy and balanced, such as time, space, affection, or all three. Of course, many other factors from your home environment may also be having a negative influence on your pooch.

How breeding can play a part:

Some dogs may be known to have recurring behavioural patterns that are not conducive to forming healthy relationships with humans, or other animals, and when they are bred from, they often reproduce pups who share the same negative characteristics. Breeders must take ownership of this potential problem.

What to think about when planning to bring a new dog into your home:

Avoiding having a family pet with issues may be as simple as paying close attention to where you are getting it from. If you are buying a puppy from a breeder, then ask to see its parents and assess their personalities and behaviour.

Do some research, too. If you are buying a certain breed of dog, then research and find out what their temperament generally is, and assess whether a dog like that, will fit into your life and home. If you are new to dogs, then do plenty of research about the basics of caring for them and what to expect when you bring a new pet into your home.

This doesn’t mean that by researching dogs you will avoid having a pet with problems, but it will arm you with the knowledge and resources to help you tackle any issues as they arise, or preferably, before they arise.

Dealing with a problem pet:

While there is no quick fix solution to a dog with a behavioral problem, and no solution that fits all dogs, there is usually a solution, and most dogs with issues can go on to be the perfect pet and companion. Perhaps it’s important to remember that it’s also okay to make mistakes, and you doubtless will make them, unless you are a dog behavioral expert. On that note, many people do seek professional help with their pets, and that’s perfectly acceptable and maybe your only solution if your pet is causing serious issues within your home.

If your pet has a few problems and you’re beginning to wonder if you will ever have the perfect pooch that you dreamed of owning, never give up and never ignore the problem. The quickest way of getting a best friend from your pooch, is to admit that there’s a problem, and find humane ways of tackling it.
