GET TO KNOW OUR MOUNTAIN AREAS
Welcome to Cherokee County NC, a special place in the south-western corner of North Carolina, was formed in 1839 from a portion of Macon County, located in the Valley River Valley, where the scenes and panoramas are breathtaking, where the forested mountains touch the sky, the lake sparkle, the air is crisp, fresh, clean and the charm of delightful mix of tradition and history. Our entire County is filled with opportunities to relax and unwind, to be active and experience a mountain adventure.

Murphy, NC 28906 - the charming historical small-town America, where the Hiwassee River and Valley Rivers merge - is the County seat. The Cherokee Courthouse on Peachtree Street downtown Murphy is the only blue marble structure of its kind in the world. Just beginning the day with majestic morning mists over the mountains, filled with fun and surprises with many shops to visit, restaurants to dine in, bookstores, antiques, ice-cream, flea markets, crafts and movies. Just around 30-minutes round trip can take you to lakes, streams, whitewater rafting, fishing, boating, hunting, camping, hiking, horse-back riding and much more for you and family to explore.

Other unique communities include Andrews, Marble, Peachtree, Brasstown of Warns, Ranger, Culberson, Grape Creek, Hanging Dog, Topton, Ogreeta and Unaka.

As saying “in the middle of nowhere” in the Great Smoky Mountains, touted as being two-hours driving distance to the major cities of States: Atlanta, Athens-Georgia; Sylva, Waynesville, Asheville-North Carolina; Chattanooga, Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg-Tennessee; Cherokee Indian reservation; Greenville-South Carolina. As a result, Cherokee County NC and nearby destinations in the southern Appalachian Mountains become the most favorite stop.
