On May 13, 2014 Studio Montclair opens “The Window,” an exhibit that considers what painting, two-dimensional art, has become since Filippo Brunelleschi thought of it as a metaphorical window into a naturalistic, ordered world. It brings together the diverse works, practices, and genres of pictorial art that have grown from that concept. The exhibit runs from May 13 through August 15 at the SMI Gallery at Academy Square, 33 Plymouth St. Montclair, NJ. An opening reception will be held Friday, May 16, from 6 to 9 pm. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday 7 am to 7 pm.

“The Window” has brought together a diverse group of paintings that explore the varied practices and genres of painting today. This group also exhibits how contemporary artists are able to not only explore aesthetic and formal relationships, but also what can be defined as painting,” says Michael Benevenia, a curator of the exhibit along with Pam Cooper.

Michael Benevenia is an artist from and working in Northern New Jersey. His work concentrates primarily on the intersection of painting and sculpture, incorporating personally reflective, meditative forms. He received his BFA in Visual Art and Art History from Mason Gross School of the Arts and worked for The Sculpture Foundation installing and building monumental metal sculpture. Pam Cooper has curated exhibitions for a number of non-profit organizations in the Metro area and has also served as a corporate art consultant and curator for the past five years. An artist herself, Pam uses mixed media in her sculpture, papermaking, and printmaking work.

Participating artists are Sono Arima, Susanna Baker, Howard Berelson, Ron Brown, Sara Conklin, Kristen Crouch, Joshua Didriksen, Madeline Giotta, Mildred Kaye, Julie Levine, Isabella Pizzano, Janice Rose, Phillipa Scott, Hilary Shank-Kuhl, Heather Shaw, Caren Sommer-Lazar, Irv Suss, Heidi Sussman, Marianne Trent, and Tony Zaza.

Studio Montclair Inc. is a non-profit organization of exhibiting professional artists and others interested in the visual arts. It aims to promote culture and education in the visual arts and encourage emerging artists. Founded in 1997, the organization has over 300 members, including artists from around the United States.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.
