Hospice Expert: Having \"The Talk\" About End-of-Life Care with Loved Ones

Jacqueline Salvatore, LSW, MSW, who runs the Bereavement Program for the Compassionate Care Hospice in Central N.J., will be the featured speaker at the Annual Conference of the Memorial Society of Northeast N.J. on April 17.
Immediately following a brief business meeting, she will provide insights about initiating and having “The Conversation” with a loved one’s about his or her end-of-life wishes.
The Society, which is part of the national Funeral Consumers Alliance, will hold its Annual Conference on Sunday, April 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.at the Montclair Public Library’s auditorium, 50 South Fullerton Avenue. The program is free and the public is invited. Parking is available on local streets and a nearby parking lot. Following the meeting, there will be time for questions and refreshments.
Ms. Salvatore will also explain the many options that are available when a loved one is in hospice care. “Too often, people only have a partial understanding about the type of care that hospice programs provide to patients. Hospice is more about giving patients and their families more options, according Ms. Salvatore “By having more choices, an individual can make decisions about how to spend each day, and he or she will feel more in control and less anxious.”
One of realities about having “The Conversation” is recognizing that each family member brings a personal point-of-view to the discussion. The opinions can vary from avoidance to aggressive care. One person, for example, may say “let’s do this another time” while another recommends “doing everything we can to extend the person’s life.”
Even though the process of sorting through conflicting views can produce friction among loved ones, Ms. Salvatore still encourages families to have “The Conversation.”
Ms. Salvatore’s presentation is part of the Memorial Society’s educational outreach program. One of the nonprofit organization’s duties involves supplying current and accurate information about the costs and services offered by local funeral businesses.
