Studio Montclair Inc. (SMI) announces “Depth of Field,” an exhibit featuring alternative views of photography, which opens on June 2 and runs until June 30, 2011, at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ. An opening reception will be held on June 2, 2011 from 6 to 8 pm. The SMI annual meeting will begin at 7 pm the night of the reception.
“Depth of Field” explores other ways of seeing outside of the traditional approaches to photography, either through subject matter, the way an image is captured, or how it is printed and displayed. Laurie McCoy Foster, the curator of “Depth of Field,” explains, “As photography becomes ubiquitous in our daily lives through various media outlets and networks, I feel myself longing for a more organic, less literal way of seeing the world. When so many of us record daily life with our smart phones and digital point and shoots, I wish for more dimensional, less representational ways of conveying those images whether it be through digital or physical, or mixed media layering.”
Laurie McCoy Foster is an experienced photographer, whose background includes traditional methods of shooting and printing in the darkroom, often using the landscapes in the west as inspiration. Over the course of her explorations, she reveals her natural curiosity. She has operated a portrait studio, done commercial assignments and event photography, and taught portrait photography for several years. But, for a dozen years now, she has concentrated on fine art photography, incorporating digital methods and experimental techniques. She is tireless in her willingness to adapt new techniques and is an active member of SMI, a vibrant artists’ community in Montclair. Her explorations are very much inspired by her travel and attempts at capturing people and places in new ways. Her recent work tests the boundaries between photography and other media, as she begins to explore a variety of alternative techniques. She exhibits her work in the NY Metro area.
Studio Montclair Inc. is a non-profit organization of exhibiting professional and emerging artists and others interested in the visual arts. The mission of the organization is to promote culture and education in the visual arts.
