But it's refreshing that the proprietors of Club Timbuktu, Omar Gagali and Youssouf Komaraest, actually have lived the cultures their venue represents. Gagali, a Somali immigrant, is co-owner of Lula's Cafe, 2921 N. Oakland Ave., and Komara is, a native of Guinea and a French teacher at the Clara Mohammed School, 317 W. Wright St., offer Club Timbuktu as a living museum of all things African, from the earth-toned color scheme to the art on the walls to the eats. "We've come across lots of people in the Milwaukee area who love African cuisine and the art and the music, people of all races," Gagali said. "That's why we settled in Riverwest, the most diverse community around here. And we didn't think there was one place that brought all of those elements (African food, art and music) together." Perhaps best of those three elements in Club Timbuktu is the food. Popular dishes include the huge variety of chicken and turkey sandwiches, as well as such traditional African dishes as Komara House Special chicken, sauteed in "special" sauce and served over rice. If I had to pick a primo dish, it'd be the fish and attieke, grilled talapia with couscous made from casaba. BOOZE: There's a nice mix of beer and wine and even pina coladas and many flavors of daiquiris and margaritas. But with Club Timbuktu's African theme, you really should try one of their "tribute" drinks. The tropical martini is a blend of amaretto, almond liqueur and Malibu coconut rum, garnished with a cherry and pineapple. I'm a big fan of the Caribbean martini - a blend of vanilla vodka, Malibu rum and pineapple juice. And you need to be sitting down for the house special, Timbuktu Coconut Banana martini, whose ingredients we can't reveal but together they really pack a punch. Best of all, the martinis are all priced $6. Best Known For... West African cuisine. |
