Food and Outdoor dining – Do it in Safety!
Most homeowner’s insurance policies will cover you if someone sustains an injury while on your property. While food poisoning is rarely serious enough to cause permanent injury or result in a law suit, your guests certainly won’t appreciate a dose of it.
Whether you’re planning an outdoor cookout for family, a romantic picnic for two or a barbecue for many, the chances are that you will be transporting some of your planned menu items to the venue. You need to make sure that you do it as safely as possible so that you minimize the risk of anyone getting sick from food contamination. Here are a few tips:
Use a cooler that will keep cold food at 40 degrees F or less. Carry your drinks in a separate cooler as it’s likely to be opened more often. Put the coolers in the inside of the car, which is generally cooler than the trunk and store in the shade when you reach your destination.
Taking along extra bags of ice is a good idea as well, so that you can replenish the cooler ice often.
Don’t partially precook meat or poultry before you transport it; either cook until done and chill before putting in the cooler or carry it separately, raw. If you’re taking hot food, cook the item thoroughly, to boiling point, and wrap the dish in foil and then towels or blankets to keep it hot.
Take-out food, like chicken or barbecue should be eaten within two hours of purchase or thoroughly chilled before transporting.
Don’t take excessive amounts of food with you; leftovers should be discarded as they will no longer be hot/cold enough to be taken back home again.
