Apple Watch owners were hoping to skip to watch the next major operating system update on SmartWatch - OS 4 - to upgrade their smartphones first.

While WatchOS 4 can use all available Apple Watch hardware, iOS 11 will not be available for iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C.

Presumably, Apple Watch owners who use one of these smartphone models will be forced to switch to a new iPhone to update OS 4.

The reason for this is that Apple Watch always needs to activate a compatible iPhone and update its operating system.

You must run the latest iOS update with the monitoring application; The monitoring application can access the latest watchOS software update.
