The Columbia Baroque Soloists present "Characters of the Dance" featuring Baroque dancers Paige Whitley-Bauguess and Thomas Baird in a delightful program of costumed characters that graced the 18th-century stage featuring elegant music of the French Baroque performed by ensemble members: Jerry Curry, harpsichord; Jean Hein and Timothy Hein, Baroque recorders; Brittnee Siemon, mezzo soprano; Gail Ann Schroeder, viola da gamba and guest artists Mary Hostetler Hoyt and Erika Cutler, Baroque violins. 36th Annual Aiken's Makin: Downtown Aiken


Friday September 7, 2012 and Saturday September 8, 2012


If you love really good arts and crafts, you need to head an hour west to Aiken for this fabulous show. I have attended quite a few over the years, and this show never disappoints. It's set up on the streets of Downtown Aiken and you'll find craftspeople and artists from all over the South. This year's juried show will feature 175 artists and crafters, including 66 new ones, and 25 food vendors, of which six are new. Visit the Aiken's Makin' website.



















8th Annual Jazz Under the Stars: State House North Lawn


Friday September 7 & Saturday September 8, 2012


Bring your blankets, your lawn chairs and a good set of ears for this special night of live jazz performed FREE by Skipp Pearson on Sax, Dionne Preussner on Piano, Danny Boozer on Drums, along with Special Guest Artists! Friday night will feature the Allen University Jazz Band; Saturday night will feature the South Carolina National Guard Band. Come early (6pm) and enjoy a free swingline dance lesson. The Life & Times of Congressman Robert Smalls: SC State Museum


Now through March 3, 2013


Robert Smalls was born an enslaved person on April 5, 1839, in a small cottage in Beaufort, SC. By the time he died in 1915, Smalls had served five terms in the United States Congress. Visitors to this exhibit will learn about his heroic exploits during the Civil War and be inspired by his legacy of bravery, leadership and public service to all Americans. This Saturday, September 8, 2012,
Michael Boulware Moore, great, great grandson of Robert Smalls, presents an illustrated history of his family and talks about the challenges of living up to a legacy. Robert Smalls reenactor Donald Sweeper will conduct a tour of the exhibit while engaging visitors in a question and answer session. Visitors can then view the Adrena Ifill film “Congressman Robert Smalls: A Patriot’s Journey from Slavery to Capitol Hill.” 1 p.m.
