Its purpose is to keep the legacy of African American music alive. Each year during Black History Month, the series profiles a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. Southern Exposure New Music Series: USC School of Music Recital HallFREE Mark Stewart is most famous for being Paul Simon's lead guitarist since 1998, and he’s also a member of Steve Reich and Musicians and the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Mark's a crazy dude and, among other things, invents his own wild instruments out of PVC pipe, etc. and plays a number of non-Western instruments. Schwimmer and Fathman are his partners in a musical/comedy group called Polygraph Lounge and incredible musicians in their own rights. Among other things, Schwimmer will play a theremin, the odd electronic instrument played on the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" and many B-movie horror flicks. Arrive early as seats fill. Museum Garage Sale: SC State MuseumSaturday February 23, 2013 8am (members) 9am (non-members) - 2pm Black Bag Sale 2:30pm Props, signs and the kinds of odd items not normally found in a typical weekend yard sale will be offered to the public State Museum presents its periodic “garage sale.” “These sales are both a lot of fun and serve two good purposes,” said State Museum Registrar Michelle Baker, who is organizing the event. “They allow the public to own a little piece of the museum through items that were associated with some of our most popular exhibits, plus they help us clear out space to make room for articles to support future exhibits.” Items that curious buyers will find at this year’s sale include a prop pirate cannon, street banners from past “blockbuster” exhibits, plastic skeletons, a “Chewbacca” mask, hands and suit, plastic Easter eggs, building blocks and various electronics, including a 24-track sound mixing board.
