Horders: How to help them get their homes ready for sale by Laurel Grandle, Knoxville, TN REALTOR
After nearly 30 years of professionally selling real estate, I thought I seen everything…until I was asked to look at the home of a horder.
Every inch of space was taken by stuff; the showers were full of clothes, there was a path through the home, and boxes of food and clothing lined it to the ceiling; shelves were full of expensive, unopened merchandise. But there was a huge difference between the home I was seeing and the ones on TV: This home was extremely neat and clean, just packed floor to ceiling, stuff on every chair, bed, table and the showers were full of hanging clothes.
As I talked to the seller, I realized she had not purchased these items to help the poor…she had purchased all this stuff for herself, yet she could not use it…she couldn’t reach most of it and she had two houses, this was a second house in the same neighborhood!
Most of us struggle with throwing things away, but when it reached this degree, help is needed.
I felt it would be a disservice to market the house so cluttered…buyers would not be able to see the huge rooms, beautiful wood floors, etc., with all the accumulated possessions.
I told the seller she’d most likely experience discomfort and frustration, but gradually I thought she’d feel less burdened and that by ridding herself of a lot of unnecessary items, she’d eventually love the results. I emphasized that I was NOT a psychologist and that she could not be helped until she was willing to get therapy.
Once the house is cleaned out, we can proceed to market.

Here is what some of her clients have said about her recently, “Laurel has an unlimited amount of patience. My family has very specific needs and she understood them and worked with us until we found the perfect home at the right price. I don’t think anyone else would have done that for us and we’ll always be thankful we found her and worked with her. She’s wonderful!” Margo
“Laurel has accommodated us on many occasions very quickly, as our schedules change all the time. She was always understanding of the time and date changes and she helped us find a great house.” Williams
“Thank you! It's wonderful having you as our agent and we both think you're a terrific person. Bob was right when he said we'd love you.” Joe
“Laurel really knows the area and the market. She didn’t waste any time…she showed us what we ask for in the location we wanted and made the whole move a very good experience for our family”. Robert
“Before we wrote an offer, Laurel did a detailed market analysis for us and discussed it with us so we understood what a fair price would be. She went over the entire contract in detail and clarified everything for us. We purchased with confidence and we’d never use anyone else IF we ever decide to sell!” Anne
