There are countless issues that can arise with trees and all sorts of landscaping throughout a residential or commercial property, and it’s always a big bummer to see your foliage not flourishing to its fullest abilities.

That’s why we are here with this article to help you solve some of the more common issues we see with troubled trees. We’re very happy to have partnered up with the Kenosha Tree Service to help us compile this list of 5 of the most common residential tree issues, and the solutions to each of them.

So here they are!

1. Lack of nutrients and mineral recycling

The common issue here is a lack of nutrients, and the thing you have to realize is that trees are naturally used to forest climates where the soil is full of nutrients from all the decomposing leaves. We all tend to remove our leaves so we have nice looking lawns, but this prevents our trees from getting the natural nutrients it needs to thrive.

The solution to this issue is to simply add nutrition back into your yard’s soil by knowing when to fertilize your trees and properly mulch the entire base of the trunks. The mulch will do a great job at slowly breaking down and replenishing the soil.

2. Compacted soils

There tends to be surplus of compacted soil in our yards in which our trees grow on, and this partly our fault because we all like to run and play in our back yards. The foot traffic throughout our backyards, including lawn mowers and other projects can create significant soil compaction over time. Newer homes also see this problem frequently because the soil was compacted during construction, and this leads to stressed soil, and root restrictions.

The solution to this type of issue is to loosen up the soil by doing vertical mulching and mixing in organic matter to help loosen up the compactness of the soil.

3. Pests

A lot of trees that show signs of stress are being impacted negatively be pests, and when trees are already struggling for other reasons the pests can then begin to take control of the tree’s wellbeing and even cause the tree to die in some instances.

The main solution to this type of issue is to keep track of your trees and detect any type of disease early, and this means monitoring for pests and calling your local arborist for treatment advice when necessary.

4. Natural and mechanical damage

Animals and lawn equipment are some of the things that can do serious damage to trees. This includes animals like rabbits and deer that eat small trees and shrubs.

The solution to this issue is to check up on your trees on a regular basis and inspect them for any type of problem areas, as well doing mulching, watering and proper fertilizing.

5. Restricted root growth

Roots are always running into certain obstacles as the trees can really large, and it’s important for people to understand that the roots are going to expand much further past the tree’s canopy edges. When the roots of a tree run into obstacles it can ultimately limit the growth of the roots.

The main type of solution for restricted root growth is to improve the overall health of the soil, feeding your tree properly and girdling roots.
