Restaurant Description
The Mango Room is the vision of Thelma Oliver, owner and General Manager, and Ian Hockenberger, Executive Chef. With a combined twenty years of restaurant experience, this couple saw the future in downtown Kansas City, and chose to make it a better place.

Our cuisine is really the food of the African Diaspora. It evolved from the daily cooking of servants and slaves to colonial Europeans. It was fusion cuisine three hundred years before the term ever came into use. In essence we can look at the Southern United States and the Caribbean as one contiguous region, both rich in agricultural wealth and enriched by trading such goods (cotton, sugar and rum) for human flesh. While the colonial history was unfair to countless millions, it did ultimately produce lively multicultural communities. While America has few indigenous cuisines, Southern cooking is one of the oldest and proudest. New Orleans ranks with Paris as a gastronomic mecca. The Caribbean influence on American cookery is profound, especially since it was the birthplace of barbecue, that quintessentially American technique. The food at the Mango Room reflects this multicultural heritage, serving both southern classics like Fried Chicken and Catfish, meats smothered in the southern style, rice dished in honor of that grains vital importance to the region, and Caribbean mainstays including jerk chicken, escovitched catfish, mango salsa and salmon with rundown sauce. You can be assured that when you dine at the Mango Room, everything you partake of will have been prepared in-house by the talented culinary staff. This extends right down to the ice cream with your dessert and the French fries with your hamburger.
