1. This may seem like a no-brainer, but make sure to clear your schedule on the day of your move. Take off work, reschedule your book club meeting, skip yoga- dedicate your entire day to your move.
2. Gather and secure all sensitive documents BEFORE you move. These include social security cards, passports, birth certificates, medical records…
3. Be sure to have some extra boxes and tape handy, just in case you realize you forgot to pack something, an overloaded box breaks, etc. There is usually a cabinet or two that slips your mind in the midst of packing up your entire living space.
4. Make the moving crew’s job as easy as possible- clear all walkways, reserve an elevator if necessary, obtain a parking space or loading zone. The more easily and speedily the movers can transport your stuff, the quicker your move will be.
5. Have a basic idea of where your furniture should go in your new place. If the movers know approximately where to put couches and tables, etc, the whole process will go a lot faster. If you’re paying by the hour, this is obviously a good thing.
6. Do a pass around your old place before you leave. Check to make sure all appliances are unplugged and clean, check to make sure you haven’t left anything behind… just double check everything. This is a courtesy to your landlord,
7. Take out some cash beforehand so you are prepared to tip your movers when the job is done (provided they do good work, of course.) Movers rely just as much on tips as waitresses or taxi drivers.
