In the midst of unpacking and organizing upon moving into a new home, it's easy to put the garage on the back burner in terms of spacial economics. But just as you reassemble and rearrange your furniture, pictures, electronics and knickknacks, the place where your vehicle sleeps is also worthy of your attention. When storing boxes, crates, tools, sports equipment and any other miscellaneous item, fitting it all into the garage while allowing space for your car can be quite a challenge. Here are some easy tips for utilizing your garage space economically.
1. Figure out what you actually need to store in the garage for easy access, and what can be stored in other areas of the house, like the attic. Things like toys, gadgets, old report cards, or age-old family relics would most likely find a better home in a closet or crawlspace.
2. Divide and Conquer. It's not a bad idea to separate your garage into three or four (or several) compartments, and then organize your boxes or what have you, into those sections. Divisions are commonly made by shelves. Categorize your stuff before you designate your shelving or any other partitions.
3. But before constructing these units, calculate just how much space you'll need to pull in your car and open your doors. Use a measuring tape if need be.
4. Consolidate! If you have a shelving unit for various items such as flower pots or tennis rackets, place some boxes on the shelves as well. Put as many tools as possible in your toolbox, and put the box in a cabinet or on a shelf.
5. One of the best ways to enhance garage space is to store vertically. Bikes, sleds, and snowboards, etc. can be stored vertically or horizontally on a hook or rack, or on the wall. So can things like hammers and wrenches- the toolbox alternative. Stack bins or buy/build shelving units vertically to make room for other things.
6. Label your boxes for ease of accessibility. This may seem tedious, but it will make your life easier when you're trying to find those gardening shears or your tire pressure gauge.
