If you have never attended the Onslow County Special Olympics, allow me to share with you.
Athletes compete in events that best suits their skill level and the excitement is overwhelming. The squeals of joy as these valiant athletes cross a finish line or the looks on their faces as they put all their effort into the softball toss, as the crowd cheers them on is priceless.
The Crime Stoppers and Dare Cars are also very popular with the athletes and they love to check them out and listen to the Cop’s theme song blasting from the car’s speakers.
Several of the volunteers are active duty military and it is wonderful to see these young men and women getting involved with the community and cheer on the athletes that they are assisting.
If you have the chance to attend, be sure not to miss the opening ceremonies scheduled to start at 9:30 am with the games starting at 9:45 am on Friday April 27th at Northside High School track 365 Commons Drive in Jacksonville, NC.
The history of the Special Olympics:
In 1962 Camp Shriver, was started by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in Potomac, Maryland. Camp Shriver came to be out of Mrs. Shriver’s concern for children with disabilities not having a safe place to play. It then became an example and promoted physical activity as well as competition for people with intellectual disabilities and became an annual event.
In 1968 the first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held in Chicago
The Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) began in Burlington, NC back in 1970 and the upcoming spring games currently offers competitions in 26 events, allowing athletes to participate in competitions such as 10m/25m/30m/50m/100m Wheelchair Races & Obstacles, Tennis Ball Throw, Running Long Jump as well as 25m/50m/100m/200m/400m Dashes.
