Internships are undoubtedly valuable, both to the intern and to the industry sector that is hosting them, and none more so than those undertaken in the digital marketing industry. That said, it can
be tricky to know how to maximize an internship so that you get the very best from the experience, while also being of use to those working alongside you.

To help you if you’re thinking about taking on an internship in the digital marketing sector, here
are 5 simple steps to making the most of the experience:

1. Take part and be a team member

Interns are of course different to those who are working full time for a company, but that doesn’t mean that you should melt into the background, or simply sit back and watch others at work. Try to get involved wherever possible and let everybody know that you can help while you’re learning. You may even have some ideas to share, and whether they receive positive feedback or not, you will still learn from sharing your thoughts and concepts with the rest of the team. Never rest on your laurels and always be keen to lend a hand or give some input.

2. Try to set yourself some clear goals and targets

There is more to an internship than simply trying to get a foot in the door, and setting yourself some clear goals during your time with a company, can help to give you some direction, but can also show your superiors that you’re serious about the role. Weekly goals often work best, and if you don’t achieve them, ask yourself why and reassess your role.

3. Be open to learning and don’t be ashamed to ask lots of questions

You’ll already have some knowledge and skills that are applicable to the role as an intern in a digital marketing company, but there will be plenty that you don’t know, and other team members will not expect you to know everything. Ask questions when you’re not sure of something and try to learn as much as you can from everyone that you’re working alongside with.

4. Accept criticism and respond positively to feedback

There may be times when as an intern, the staff members may have cause to give you constructive criticism and feedback, and it’s important to listen carefully and take on board everything that they’ve said to you. Being able to handle criticism in a positive way can help to show your colleagues that you’re mature, but learning from the feedback and turning it into positive actions is the best way to show everyone in the company that you are serious about the role and about wanting to work for them in the future.

5. Understand and adhere to company policies, procedures, and protocol

Just because you’re not a paid member of the team, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t follow the same rules as everyone else, and adhere to the general etiquette of the office. Dress appropriately, arrive and leave at the time asked of you, and always conduct yourself in a polite and professional manner. If your colleagues don’t want to work with you because of your attitude or demeanour, then there’s a strong chance that the manager won’t take you on in the role as a full-time member of the team, no matter how skilled or creative you are.

Internships are a great way of understanding a job role better and of gaining valuable experience for the rest of your working career. Make the most of your digital marketing internship and you just might find yourself with the successful and enjoyable job that
you’ve always dreamed of.
