Well, “We will get back to you” is the politest way of communicating the “rejection of the candidature” of an applicant.

However, I could deduce TWO probable reasons for the use of this phrase –

The HR practitioner delivering the message may not be properly trained to communicate rejection/ sad news.

It is apparent that a rejected candidate would like to know the reasons of his/her rejection and hence may pose several questions. So, to avert answering those questions, the HR practitioner may go for the safest bet, which is, “We will get back to you”.

We had a situation in hand in one of the job interviews where I was working as a Head HR. One of my colleagues told a job applicant that we could not carry forward her candidature, but we tried to help her out with areas of improvement for success in her future interviews. That experiment backfired on us. She started pleading for the job by telling us about her family situation, her financial issues, etc. She started crying and refused to leave the interview cabin. Eventually, we had to call office security to escort her out.

So, the phrase ‘we will get back to you’ has been fostered by both - the poor communicator HRs and the applicants who cannot handle rejection.
