A urine routine examination procedure is a laboratory test that involves a detailed analysis of urine to detect any health disorder indicated by urine. There is a host of diseases that affect the body’s excretory system. The excretory system includes kidneys, urinary tract, and urinary bladder. Any abnormality in these parts of the body can primarily affect the appearance, concentration and the content of the urine. When a urine sample is submitted to a pathology lab, following examinations are performed -
Physical Examination – Physical examination involves determining the urine routine examination normal values by the examining urine volume, colour, appearance, reaction, odour, and sediment formation at the bottom of the container after collection and specific gravity. Urine routine examination interpretation - The normal volume of an early morning mid-stream should be 50-300ml. If it’s dark orangish, it may indicate a liver disorder, if it’s white in colour it shows the presence of pus, if it's red in colour, it shows the presence of red blood cells.
Chemical Examination of Urine – It includes examining the protein, glucose, ketone bodies, bile pigment, Bile salts, Urobilinogen, and blood content in the given sample of the urine. Some of the additional chemical tests involve non-glucose sugar test, Nitrate and Indican test, etc. A urine routine examination results vary from one pathology lab to another and involve minimal or risk involved.
Microscopic Examination of Urine - Microscopic examination includes examining plus cells, epithelial cells, casts, crystals, bacteria, Amorphous material, yeast cells and parasites present in a given sample of urine.
However, abnormal urine examination test results further require additional screening methods that help to determine the cause. Some of them are – Urine culture, Complete blood count test, liver or real Panel, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) and imaging tests such as CT scans or MRIs.

In this, the patient has to give samples at doctor’s chamber or hospital. The sample is collected in a cup-like container and then submitted to the lab technician. In some cases, doctors may request to perform urinalysis by using a catheter. The catheter is injected into the bladder through the urethra.
