Typhoid fever is a serious and widely recognized public health problem that is highly associated with mortality and morbidity. Typhoid fever is caused by a particular type of bacteria known as Salmonella Typhi. These types of bacteria are found in contaminated water and food. What are the diagnosis and treatment processes?
Diagnosis – Despite performing bacteriologic isolation methods, doctors also feel the importance of performing rapid serologic diagnostic typhoid tests for typhoid fever. Typhidot test is a major type of typhoid test which detects the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies in the blood. The antibodies are present in the bloodstream and the test determines these antibodies against the Outer Membrane Protein (OMP) of the Salmonella Typhi. A person suffering from Typhoid fever will get a positive result within 2-3 days of infection and separately identifies both the types of antigens. This type of medical test incorporates nitrocellulose strips which are impregnated with OMP antigen. This helps to identify the antigen separately.
Treatment - A typhoid fever can be treated with antibiotics as they help to kill the typhoid bacteria. Antibiotics and supportive care have proved to be a great help in reducing the mortality rates of the Typhoid patients.
