The first time we heard about Project Soli was in June last year. The idea to detect and recognize gestures with miniaturized radar represents a whole range of possibilities in the development of mobile devices and wearable accessories. The original demo of Google showed us several actions under the control of Soli, but the engineer Alex Bravo published a brief demo of SoliType which allows you to type in the air effectively.
Data entry remains one of the great challenges that all mobile device manufacturers must face. The touch screens have their limits, and the return of the physical keyboard on smartphones is unlikely. To this, we add the advancement of accessories such as smart watches and other wearable devices, with a minimal amount of buttons, and very compact designs. Speech recognition can not be used everywhere, therefore, the gesture recognition is emerging as a more relevant alternative. In the middle of last year, Google ATAP group introduced Project Soli, a platform mini radar based on recognition, and very quietly, the Mountain View giant began delivering the first development kits.
Luckily, we can already see the first results. The engineer Alex Bravo published on Google Plus a short video of 26 seconds at which shares the use of SoliType, a system that combines a smartphone with a Soli module to write in the air without the intervention of a physical keyboard. Bravo carries a designing one – handed keyboards time and much of his material is available on YouTube but with SoliTypeexposed the gesture recognition ability to serve the fast data entry.
Now, there is no doubt that SoliType and its variants will require serious training to the user, and maybe that’s its great weakness. The gestures are intuitive, but I think nobody is willing to learn ten or fifteen different gestures to enter text. Maybe I’m wrong and other similar projects to exploit market Soli, however, very difficult to replace the traditional keyboard. What do you think?
