The Madhya Pradesh Legislature, in the 16 years of the Republic of India, enacted an Act for the establishment of a Board to improve Secondary Education in Madhya Pradesh and other ancillary matters. In 1965 this independent body was established under The Madhya Pradesh Secondary Education Act 1965. The MP Board prescribes the syllabus, for candidates from Standard IX to Standard XII, for schools associated with it & exams whose scores are required to gain admission in higher study schools. It handles three board examinations the High School Certificate Examination for standard X, Middle School Exam for Standard VIII and the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Exam for standard XII, which is a school leaving exam.
