Haemoglobin is a kind of protein found in red blood cells which contain iron molecules. Primarily, haemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen from lungs to the body tissues and bringing Carbondioxide back to the lungs. The iron molecule present in haemoglobin helps in maintaining the normal shape of the red blood cells. A Hemoglobin blood test is a part of a routine blood test known as Complete Blood Count. A Hemoglobin blood test normal range varies from one lab to another.
Why is hemoglobin measured?
A hemoglobin test is used to diagnose the severity of anaemia (low RBC count, hemoglobin and haematocrit), polycythaemia.
It is measured to monitor the response to treatment of anaemia or polycythaemia. It helps the doctor to make decisions about blood transfusions and other treatment options.
Some health conditions can affect the production of RBC in the bone marrow and cause increase or decrease in the number of mature red blood cells. Every diagnostic center in East Delhi performs Hemoglobin blood test as a part of routine blood count test and offers 100 percent test results.
When is the test ordered?
A Hemoglobin blood test is ordered as a part of a regular health check-up. The test is also ordered when one is suffering from severe signs and symptoms of anaemia. This include-
• Weakness or fatigue,
• Lack of energy,
• Paleness,
• Shortness of breath,
• Disturbed vision,
• Severe headache and dizziness,
• Enlarged sleepen, etc.
A hemoglobin blood test cost is inexpensive in nature and possesses no risk or threat.
What do the results mean?
The normal values are related to person’s age and gender. The normal values should be 0.5g/Dl.
A person having low haemoglobin level in the blood indicates that the patient is suffering from anaemia. Some of the common causes of anaemia are- nutritional and vitamin B 12 deficiency, gastrointestinal blood loss, kidney problems, blood loss due to trauma or during surgery, problems in red blood cell synthesis problems, suppression of bone marrow due to suppression by chemotherapy or radiation, etc.
High level of haemoglobin means that the levels are above the upper limits from the normal range. Some of the common causes for high hemoglobin level are- smoking, bone marrow disorders, overdose or inappropriate intake of drugs called Epoetin alfa, living at high altitudes, congenital heart disorders, pulmonary or lung diseases, etc.
