On September 23rd, 2018, the Prime Minister of India launched the world’s largest government-funded healthcare scheme named ‘Ayushman Bharat Yojana’. The scheme which was later renamed as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) was aimed at providing health cover benefit to the poor and deprived rural families apart from the identified occupational category of urban workers.

Once rolled out, the Ayushman Bharat scheme will provide healthcare coverage benefits to around 50 crore citizens across the country. Here are the key features of the PMJAY scheme:
Eligibility Criteria for PMJAY
There is no enrolment process to avail the benefits of PMJAY scheme since it is an entitlement-based mission. The government has already identified the list of more than 50 crore beneficiaries on the basis of deprivation and occupational criteria using the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data of 2011.
The government of India has shared the list of eligible families with the respective state governments as well as state-level departments of relevant areas. A dedicated family identification number will be allotted to the eligible families. Only families whose names are there in the list are eligible for PMJAY benefits and no more names can be added to this list.

- It will cover 1,354 medical and surgical packages categorised under 25 specialities like cardiology, neurosurgery, oncology or chemotherapy for different types of cancer, and burns among many others
- In case of hospitalization, you or your family members do not need to pay anything under the scheme provided that you go to any government hospital or choose an empanelled private hospital for the treatment
- Unlike other health insurance schemes, there is no waiting period for pre-existing diseases under the Ayushman Bharat initiative. All kinds of diseases are covered right from the day one of the issuance of policy under the PMJAY scheme. The benefit covers includes both pre- and post-hospitalisation expenses.
