Conjunctivitis or pink eye is an eye disease which causes the swelling of the mucus membrane of the eye surface and eye lid.
The lining of the eye which is usually clear becomes swollen and reddish-pink if any infection or irritation occurs.

Pink eye is a common infection which doesn’t need any special medical attention. The eye is normally affected by it for about 7-10 days. If an individual is suffering from extreme pain and irritation, in such cases it is possible for the person to be infected by any of the following diseases and special medical attention is required at the earliest.
1. Viral Conjunctivitis: If the redness of the eye lasts for about three weeks, the person is probably affected by Viral Conjunctivitis.
Though this disease doesn’t require medication, however if the swelling and redness gives a lot of trouble, the effect is then neutralized by antiviral medicines as antibiotics aren’t capable of curing viral infections.
2. Bacterial Conjunctivitis: In this case the patient is provided with eye drops so as avoid the infection from spreading to others (pink eye is contagious).
3. Allergic Conjunctivitis: in this case the disease is caused by allergy. In this case usually eye drops are prescribed.
PS: it is strongly recommended to avoid contact lenses when the disease persists.
