What is Marine Engineering?

Eligibility criteria

Those interested in building a career as a marine engineer musttake science stream at school and college level. Maths and English are compulsory too. At undergraduate level of marine engineering courses, students are introduced to basic concepts of fluid dynamics, marine propulsion, managing engineering projects, and electrical power systems. Make sure that you get 70% or above at the school-level (minimum 50% in English) and 60% and above at the graduate level to be eligible to work as a marine engineer.

Being at sea for six months altogether is not as easy as they show it through popular cinema. On the contrary, it could be quite strenuous and requires a great deal of will-power, sense of duty, and presence of mind. Further, health and fitness is a prerequisite to survive when you are on board for months together. Therefore, candidates are required to fulfil the criteria mentioned below.

Age- 17-25 years with 5 years of relaxation for SC and ST candidates
Weight- Not less than 42 kgs

Mentally stable and strong psychological disposition
Candidates should be unmarried by the time of commencement

Salary Range

The average range of salary for marine engineers is given below.

• Chief Engineer- Rs 5 lacs and above
• Second Engineer- Rs 4 to 5 lacs
• Third Engineer- Rs 2.75- 3.5 lacs
• Fourth Engineer- Rs 1.5 to 2.25 lacs
• Fifth Engineer or Engineering Cade-Rs 35 to 75 thousand
