California Insurance Agency
Finding an insurance agency in California is easier than understanding the difference between an agent, an independent agency and a broker. Here are some simple definitions that might help clear up any confusion:
An “agent” can be either and independent agent or a captive agent.
A captive agent is one who represents a single insurance company or insurance group. He or she is obliged to offer your insurance business to that company first. In other words, they’re working in the interests of the insurer, not you.
An independent agent – sometimes called a broker – deals with a number of insurance companies. He or she works to find the best deal for you – because you are his or her client.
Within the “independent agent” category, there are two ways of operating. The agent can work as a contractor for particular insurance companies – and must be appointed by each insurer before they can sell their products; or they can work as a completely independent agent – to do this they must lodge a $10,000 bond, but it gives them the freedom to sell any licensed insurer’s products without being specifically appointed by that insurer.
All agents must be licensed in the State of California and their business card should contain their license number. You can check the status of any agent by visiting the California Department of Insurance website.
